Dr. Geschwind, an Associate Professor of radiology, surgery and oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is currently the Director of vascular and interventional radiology, and director of interventional radiology research at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
A native of France, he received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1991. He completed his residency training in diagnostic radiology at the University of California at San Francisco in 1996, where his research focused on cardiac MR imaging. Dr. Geschwind completed his training in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and joined the faculty in 1998 as an assistant professor. He became director of vascular and interventional radiology and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. He recently completed the Leadership Development Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Since he joined the Johns Hopkins faculty, Dr. Geschwind has focused his clinical expertise on treating hepatic and other malignancies. He is responsible for the creation of a dedicated Center of Oncologic Interventions. As a researcher focused on finding new therapies for liver cancer, Dr. Geschwind and colleagues have been working on developing new approaches with drugs designed to block tumor metabolism in cancer cells. He just received an RO1 grant from the NIH to study this topic further.
Dr. Geschwind has authored or co-authored more than 160 published manuscripts and abstracts mostly on magnetic resonance imaging and interventional oncology (treatment of liver cancer). He has won numerous national and international awards, including the Alexander Margulis Society Excellence in Research Award from the University of California San Francisco (1995), the Annual Memorial Award form the Association of University Radiologists (1994), and the Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award from the Society of Interventional Radiologists (SIR) in 2000. In addition, he was named the American Roentgen Ray Society Scholar in 2001, which allowed him to pursue a Masters Program in molecular biology at Johns Hopkins and received the society's 2003 Certificate of Merit. He recently received the Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for his research on new drug delivery systems for liver cancer. He has also been the recipient of many research grants from various organizations such as the American Cancer Society, RSNA, Society of Interventional Radiologists, and American Roentgen Ray Society. Finally, in 2005, he received a 3-year grant from the NIH (RO1) to study new intraarterial therapy against liver cancer.
Dr. Geschwind serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR), reviews manuscripts for many journals related to oncology and interventional radiology, and he has lectured throughout the world on the topic of liver cancer therapies.
